About the Mexican Red-Kneed Tarantula
This large tarantula is usually black with bright red knees, and its body is covered with tiny hairs. The first two legs are used for holding prey, and the remaining six are for walking. If a leg is lost, it will grow back in 7 years. Females live 25 to 30 years, while males live about 7 years. These creatures are generally peaceful and live along the Pacific coast of Mexico in scrublands and the deserts of the southwestern United States. The red-kneed tarantula feeds on frogs, small birds, insects, mice, and other spiders. Its body is about 3 inches long, while its leg span averages 10 inches.
