Rock rattlesnakes vary in color, and are identifiable by narrow bands that are bordered in black. Rattlesnakes are common in both North and South America. Their rattles are used as a warning to predators. New sections are added to their rattle every time they shed their skin. Though their venom is dangerous, these reptiles avoid people whenever possible. Special "pits" located between their eyes and nose can sense the body heat of prey in the dark.
